General dentistry
The importance of keeping your teeth healthy
General dentistry (also known as conservative dentistry) is probably the most fundamental area of dental medicine. It essentially means the functional and aesthetical restoration of a patient’s healthy tooth. The most commonly used treatments in general dentistry are fillings and root canal treatments. It can also include extraction surgeries in some cases, when a certain tooth is so badly damaged that it cannot be fixed with fillings, root canal treatments or even crowns.
The health of our teeth has a significant effect on our entire organ-system. Losing the ability of chewing leads to severe digestive issues, not to mention the inflammation inside the effected teeth has a serious effect on all organs in the human body.
In conclusion, regular dental check-ups and proper oral care are extremely vital for your overall wellbeing.
Fillings
Root canal treatments
When a tooth decay reaches the nerves inside the tooth, it quickly gets inflamed and often forms a source of serious pain.
During a root canal treatment, we are essentially getting rid of dead nerves inside the tooth that are causing the mentioned inflammation. In order to be able achieve the perfect results, the treatment is broken down into a few separate steps, meaning it will require more appointments at the dental office. The final step is a root canal filling. In some cases, the tooth could be so badly damaged before the treatment that it might need prosthetic work afterwards, such as crowns or bridges.
Root canal treatments are said to be very painful procedures, but thanks to modern anaesthetic techniques it can be carried out with absolutely no pain at all.
What can I do for the health of my teeth?
Brushing your teeth twice a day
Consistent and proper teeth brushing is probably one of the key elements of oral healthcare. Alongside consistency, intensity is also very important, it is ususally advised to brush your teeth at least for 3 minutes every time.
Paying attention to your diet
Sugars and many other carbohydrates highly contribute to the formation of tooth decay as they are the main source of food for bacteria inside the mouth. This is why it is extremely important to reduce your consumption of refined sugars and fizzy drinks.
Flossing
Most dentists are absolutely convinced that flossing is actually more important than teeth brushing, as it is able to remove the smallest pieces of food from in-between your teeth that a toothbrush would not be able to.
Vitamins and minerals
Continuing with your diet, vitamins and minderals play a very important role in the health of your bones and teeth. Vitamin A and K, fluoride and calcium have the most important effect above all.
Scaling and deep cleaning
Dental plaque is a biofilm that grows on certain surfaces inside the mouth. Bacterial plaque is one of the major causes of tooth decay and other gum diseases. We are not able to remove it with a tootbrush, it requires professional treatment provided by a dentist or a dental hygienist.
Regular dental check-ups
It is strongly advised to visit the dentist at least twice a year. The earlier we treat the problem, the better oral teeth health will be on the long run.
